The Burden of Shame — 2 Comments

  1. I love Pádraig Ó Tuama. Thank you for this Robert. I sometimes gently bring up trauma or childhood survival strategies. Mostly, my students are willing to share and explore these issues. I always leave an opening for them to not go there. Early in my teaching, I realized I needed some trauma training, so I did some courses with Kathy Kain, who was teaching mostly cranial sacral therapists and some somatic experiencing folks. It helped me a lot to identify trauma reactions, and be able to address some aspects of it, and/or send them to trauma experts. Maybe Shame is not exactly trauma, but the “shame shell” is similar to other survival shapings. I think we can Teach about it, and encourage a gentle exploration without being therapists.

  2. Thank you so much for this Robert. You’re probably already familiar with John Bradshaw ‘s superb book Healing the Shame that Binds You. He says that toxic shame is one the major silent epidemics of our times. God bless, Judy Hammond
